The European Poker Tour is Europe’s answer to the World Poker Tour. The European Poker Tour comprises a selection of televised top level poker tournaments held throughout Europe. Like the World Poker Tour, the European Poker Tour focuses specifically on No Limit Texas Hold ‘em events.
European Poker Tour History
The European Poker tour hasn’t been around for long enough to establish any sense of tradition and history, although it can boast phenomenal success during its short existence. First played in 2004, the European Poker Tour was designed to tap the success of major tournaments in the United States including the World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour.
Borrowing from the World Poker Tour format, the European Poker Tour was set up around a series of televised major poker tournaments. With significantly cheaper buy-ins than American Tournaments, the European Poker Tour attracted massive public interest, forcing tournament organisers to raise the buy-ins for the second season of the tournament.
Although the European Poker Tour started out as a poor cousin to the World Poker Tour it has emerged as a significant tournament in its own right, with the season three grand final awarding the winner over 6 million Euros in prize money, easily the biggest poker prize ever awarded outside of Las Vegas.
The prospect of claiming massive prizes in top European Poker Tour tournaments has created a steady flow of traffic from Las Vegas to the great European Casinos, with many top ranked World Poker Tour players taking time out to participate in European events.
European Poker Tour Format
At present the European Poker Tour comprises under a dozen major events held in cities throughout Europe. Each European Poker Tour season is played over a period of seven months. The winner of the European Poker Tour is decided in a No Limit Hold ‘em tournament held as the season finale in Monte Carlo each year.
