Mike Matusow Poker Career:

At the age of 21 Mike Matusow met a local rounder by the name of Steve Samaroff, who taught him the basics of hold ‘em poker and encouraged the young player to become involved in local cash tournaments. Matusow took to hold ‘em like a duck to water, winning over a quarter of a million dollars in 53 sessions of cash poker.

Matusow played successfully in cash games for years, before he made his tournament debut in 1997. The mouth finished second in his debut tournament, the World Series of Poker Omaha Hi/Lo event, earning over $80k and a reputation as brash, outspoken loudmouth.

During the past decade Mike Matusow has become a familiar face, and voice, at major poker tournaments. His biggest win to date was in the World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions, where he earned himself a million dollar payback.

Matusow’s live tournament earnings exceed $5 million, and are believed to be dwarfed by his earnings from online poker.

Mike Matusow Playing Style

Mike Matusow is more famous for his personality and playing style than for his achievements as a poker player. Matusow tends to deliver a running commentary on each game he participates in and has a habit of getting under the skin of his opponents.

He is also notorious for his trade-mark ‘ Matusow Meltdowns’, in which he seems to lose his composure and then self-destruct after experiencing bad beats or numerous weak hands. Mike Matusow is an Omaha specialist and was the winner of the 2002 World Series of Poker Omaha Hi/Lo tournament.
