Benitez to wait on transfers

Posted in Sports | Comments Off

Rafael BenitezLiverpool boss Rafa Benitez has admitted he may have to wait until after the World Cup before he can make any more signings (Liverpool 10/1 to win the Premier League next season).

The Spaniard’s position at Anfield remains uncertain despite his attempts to offer assurances earlier this week that he is committed the club, but he is actively searching for new talent as he bids to improve his under-performing squad.

Inter react to Benitez ‘contact’

Rafael Benitez

Serie A champions Inter Milan have rejected reports they have approached Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez about replacing Jose Mourinho at the Giuseppe Meazza (Inter Milan 4/7 to win the Champions League).

Mourinho is being tipped to depart Italy in the summer after the Champions League final. The Portuguese coach has frequently stated his dislike of the Italian media and it has been suggested he will take the reigns at Real Madrid after leading Inter in Saturday’s showdown against Bayern Munich.

Benitez casts doubt on stars’ futures

Posted in Sports | Comments Off

Rafa Benitez

Rafael Benitez has suggested he does not know whether Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres would still be at Liverpool next season to help him try to revive the club’s fortunes (10/1 Liverpool - Premier League 2010/11 outright).

The Spaniard also refused to commit his own future to the Merseysiders off the back of a miserable campaign epitomised by a drab goalless draw at Hull on the last of the season on Sunday.

Benitez revealed he is set for more talks with new chairman Martin Broughton about his Anfield tenure this week, but would not be drawn on specifics or conditions.

Benitez unsure over Reds future

Posted in Sports | Comments Off

Rafael BenitezLiverpool manager Rafael Benitez has once again hit out at the Reds board and has hinted he could leave Anfield this summer.

The Merseyside outfit were expected to challenge for the Premier League title this season after coming so close in the last campaign.

However, it has been a tough season for Liverpool and Thursday’s Europa League exit to Atletico Madrid (13/2 to beat Sevilla in the match betting) confirmed it would be another trophyless season for the Reds.

A bitter end for Benitez

Posted in Football | Comments Off

Chelsea fans will be hoping that Liverpool roll over tomorrow, making it extremely hard for Manchester United to win the league.

Ancelotti’s Blue army are two games away from reclaiming the Premier League trophy that they see as being on loan at Old Trafford for the past three seasons.

Manchester United are breathing down Chelsea’s neck and the Blues cannot afford a slip-up. Chelsea want to go into the game against Wigan on the final day of the season knowing they can still win a domestic double!

It is another trophy less season at Anfield and nothing will rile the Liverpool fanatics more than the sight of the Premier League trophy being paraded just down the M62.

I would like to put the speculation concerning Liverpool ‘turning over’ to bed, there is every chance that some Liverpool players may be dejected and lethargic after their midweek defeat in the Europa League but it goes against the grain because if Liverpool failed to turn up for the fixture, it could turn into a rout, they could be at the end of a thumping.

It is only a week ago that Chelsea subjected Stoke to an embarrassing 7-0 defeat at the Bridge.

There is still an outside chance that Liverpool may take fourth spot and the game depends on Benitez’s attitude.

There are rumours that it may be the Spaniard’s last match in-charge in the home dugout. His mind may not be on the beach but it could almost definitely be in Madrid, Turin or even the other half of Manchester. If he leaves Liverpool there will be plenty of potential suitors interested in his qualities.

His intentions tomorrow may be obvious in his line-up, he will not risk unfit players with the World Cup looming and may blood some youth team players. Anfield and the Kop must get behind the players, if they are subdued and negative, this may affect the player’s mood and they could lose their edge.

For Liverpool, Torres is out for the remainder of the season, Kuyt has a calf problem and Insua will be missing with a thigh problem.

Chelsea have lost Essien and Mikel to knee injuries and Boswinga is definitely out.

In the reverse fixture earlier this season both Anelka and Malouda scored in a 2-0 win. With Liverpool worn out and dispirited, I would back Chelsea/Chelsea in the Double Result market at 15/8. A visit to Anfield is always daunting but Chelsea have too much quality and a trophy at stake.

Florent Malouda to score first at 7/1 is a tempting price, he will never have a worse miss in-front of goal than last week’s tap-in against Stoke. He is in impressive form and has been essential to Chelsea’s hunt for goals.

There will be fire in Chelsea’s bellies tomorrow and the Liverpool fans must be seething at either prospect of losing to the cocky West London side or seeing their arch rivals Manchester United stride a step closer to a record breaking fourth title in a row.

Benitez makes Aquilani admission

Posted in Sports | Comments Off

alberto aquilani

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has hinted he is finally ready to unleash big-money signing Alberto Aquilani – just as the Reds’ disappointing campaign is drawing to an end (Liverpool 16/1 to finish fourth with Stan James).

Aquilani started the 4-0 trouncing of Burnley on Sunday and played a key role in two of the goals as he operated in a more advanced position.

Don’t stop believing, says Benitez

Posted in Sports | Comments Off

Sammy Lee and Rafael Benitez

Rafael Benitez has told his Liverpool players to believe they can still secure a top-four Premier League finish (18/1 Liverpool – Top 4 Finish).

The Reds moved into position for a late run at overhauling Tottenham, Aston Villa and Manchester City by relegating Burnley in a 4-0 rout at Turf Moor on Sunday.

The acid test will come when the Merseysiders entertain title-chasers Chelsea at Anfield next Sunday (1/2 Chelsea – Premier League outright).

Benitez on reasons to be cheerful

Posted in Sports | Comments Off

Steven Gerrard

Rafael Benitez watched former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan dent his Europa League hopes – but insisted Liverpool can still reach the final (15/8 Liverpool – Europa League outright).

Uruguay international Forlan scored the only goal of a tight game on eight minutes at the Vicente Calderon to earn Atletico Madrid a 1-0 semi-final aggregate advantage (11/4 Atletico Madrid – Europa League outright).

Benitez calls for Euro away goal boost

Posted in Sports | Comments Off

Rafa Benitez and Fernando Torres

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez claims the Reds must score at Atletico Madrid in order to take what could be a crucial away goal into the second leg of the Europa League semi-final.

The Merseysiders are in the Spanish capital for the first leg after a long journey overland because of flying restrictions, although they will be without knee injury victim Fernando Torres for the clash with his former club.

And Benitez wants to see his side get on the score sheet at the Vicente Calderon, with the return game taking place at Anfield next week.

He said: “We have to score because we know that Atletico Madrid are very dangerous on the counter attack.
