Liverpool have won three out of their last four games without conceding a goal to get their bid for a top-four finish back on track and head to the Emirates knowing a victory would move them just two points behind the third-placed Gunners.

Gerrard is aware Arsene Wenger’s side will be desperate to bounce back following successive defeats to Manchester United and Chelsea which have derailed their title challenge, but he admits the game is “massive” for the Reds.

“I’m sure Arsenal will be a bit of a wounded animal on Wednesday,” the midfielder said.

“It’s a massive game for us and the target is to try to get a result where we can push on and try to get third place.”

Gerrard added: “Our target is a top-four finish but if Arsenal give us any sniff of catching them then we want to grab it.”

Liverpool will be without Alberto Aquilani (illness) and Sotirios Kyrgiakos, who is suspended, as they look for their first-ever win at the Emirates while Nicklas Bendtner is in contention for his first Arsenal start since October after working his way back to full fitness in recent weeks.
