Accenture Match Play Winners

Henrik Stenson holds the Walter Hagen Trophy after winning the Championship round match of the Accenture Match Play ChampionshipAccenture Match Play winners include some of the biggest names in golf – such as Tiger Woods, Henrik Stenson, Geoff Ogilvy, and David Toms.

The Accenture Match Play Championship hosts only players who fall within the top-ranked 64 golfers in the world, so you can be sure that competition is always tight.

The inaugural Accenture Match Play Championship winner in 1999 was Jeff Maggert, over Andrew Magee. The tournament was hosted by the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California until 2007, when it found its new home at Dove Mountain in Tucson, Arizona. However, in 2001, the event took a detour to Victoria, Australia. For 2009, the Accenture Match Play Championship will be held at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain.

In 2005, David Toms defeated Chris DiMarco 6 & 5 in a rather one-sided and clinical display. He clocked up only four bogeys in his 116 holes.

The Accenture Match Play Championship winner for 2006, Geoff Ogilvy, defeated Davis Love III 3 & 2, with stunningly composed and faultless play over the entire Championship. The victory earned him the Wedgewood blue Walter Hagen Trophy and a $1.3 million cheque.

The first run of the Accenture Match Play Championship tournament in Arizona upset the betting odds. The 2007 championship title was taken by Sweden’s Henrik Stenson. After playing 120 holes in five consecutive days, Stenson sank back-to-back birdies to clinch a victory over defending US Open Champion, Geoff Ogilvy. This victory marked an important personal achievement for Stenson, who moved to number 5 in the official world ranking.

Current defending champion and world number one, Tiger Woods clinched his 15th World Championship title in 2008, he made golf history at the event by being the first player to hold all three world championship victories at the same time!

Although Tiger Woods made a much welcomed return to golf tournaments after his short 2008 season, during which he had to recover from reconstructive knee surgery, he was knocked out of the second round by Tim Clark. Geoff Ogilvy was victorious for a second time, and won the 2009 Accenture Match Play golf championship, with Paul Casey coming in at second place.
