JNWine Champion Chase

The JNWine Champion Chase is one of the premier national hunt chases on the Irish racing calendar. Scheduled as the first Grade 1 chase of the national hunt season, it is often targeted by trainers of star chasers taking their horses off the summer break.

The JNWine Chase is run over a distance of 3 miles and features 15 fences, with entry open to 4-year-old and above horses. The race is run on Down Royal Racecourse in Northern Ireland.

JNWine Champion Chase Betting Tips

  • The JNWine Champion Chase will sometimes be targeted by the highest rated horses, and in the event that these are trading as favourites for the event, backing them is a solid option as they will usually substantially outclass the field
  • In the absence of a star of the sport (i.e. a multiple winner of British Grade 1 chases over 3 miles), odds are less reliable, and the favourites have a lower success rate
  • There’s little point in speculating on longer priced entries. The winner and places are usually occupied by horses priced 6/1 and below
  • While the JNWine Champion Chase is open to horses aged 5 and above, horses aged 5 and 6 have made little impression on the race
  • Paul Nicholls has built up a formidable record in this race, training almost half the race winners since 2000

JNWine Champion Chase History

The JNWine Champion Chase was established in 1999, with the original race distance set a 3 miles 1 furlong. In 2000 the race distance was reduced by a furlong, and it attained Grade 1 status 2 years later.

Some of the great national hunt racehorses of recent years have won the JNWine Champion Chase. The impressive Kauto Star added two wins in this race to his Cheltenham Gold Cup and King George VI titles, while Irish national hunt star Beef or Salmon also picked up a brace of wins in the event.
