The Irish Classics are five of the oldest and most prestigious grade 1 thoroughbred races in Ireland. Modelled on the English Classics, the Irish Classics are not only considered to be the pinnacle of Irish thoroughbred racing, but are also regarded as complimentary to the various English Classics. All the Irish Classics are run at Curragh Racecourse, the home of flat racing in Ireland.
An Irish Heritage
The Irish Classics are scheduled to avoid clashes with the English Classics, thereby giving the United Kingdom’s top thoroughbred racehorses the opportunity to compete in both sets of races. The first two Irish Classics are run during a single weekend in May, these being the Irish 2,000 Guineas followed by the Irish 1,000 Guineas.
The Irish Derby is run at Curragh Racecourse in June. This race is regarded as one of Europe’s premier races for 3 year old thoroughbreds, with the 1 mile 4 furlong race paying out one of the biggest prize funds in thoroughbred racing. The Irish Oaks, a fillies only race run over the Derby distance, is run a fortnight after the Irish Derby.
The Irish Classics conclude in September with the running of the Irish St Leger. This is the only one of the Irish Classics to deviate in format from its English counterpart, by allowing 3 year old and above thoroughbreds to compete. The Irish St. Leger is regarded by some as the first leg of a two-race series that concludes with the Melbourne Cup and pays out a bonus to racehorses who win both races.
