Irish 2000 Guineas Winners
2008 was the second consectutive year of doubles for the 2000 Guineas horse races. Henrythenavigator, trained by top Irish horse racing trainer Aidan O’Brien, repeated his terrific Newmarket performance to beat the favourite – New Approach – and claim a double by winning the Irish 2,000 Guineas.
Johnny Murtagh and Henrythenavigator pulled in a length and three quarters ahead of New Approach for an easy victory at Curragh Racecourse.
In 2007, Cockney Rebel – trained by Geoff Huffer and ridden by Olivier Peslier – scooped a 2000 Guineas double, winning the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and going on to win the Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh. For more on the 2007 results, see 2007 Irish 2000 Guineas.
In 2002, Rock of Gibraltar also secured a double 2000 Guineas win.
The previous year, George Washington won the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and was touted as a favourite for the Irish race, but hopes of a double were dashed by the Jeremy Noseda-trained Araafa.
Top trainer Aidan O’Brien holds the record for the most wins in the Irish 2000 Guineas – his horses have won the race a total of five times, in 1997, 1999, 2001,2002 and 2008.
