The world of horse racing has always been clouded by allegations of race fixing, corruption and ‘insider’ trading. Both jockeys and trainers have been involved in the sordid under belly of racing around the world – non more so than the ‘Bad Boys of Horse Racing’.
Bad Boy #6 – Dermot Browne
PETA would love this jockey. Dermot Browne claims to have doped 23 horses in two months in 1990, using the tranquilliser acetylpromazine. Nice guy…
Bad Boy #5 – Dean Gallagher
Dean Gallagher served an 18 month ban imposed by the Jockey Club for failing a drugs test. Gallagher is now racing again.
Bad Boy #4 – John Egan
John Egan was suspended from riding in Hong Kong after being found guilty of corruption. Although Egan won two Group Ones, the Chester Cup and the Ebor in 2006 – he is currently awaiting trial in Britain for firearms offences.
Bad Boy #3 – Chris Munce
Chris Munce was jailed for 20 months in Sydney’s Silverwater Prison after having being jailed in Hong Kong after a ‘tips for bets’ hearing (by the Hong Kong Jockey Club) found him guilty of conspiring to accept financial advantages.
Bad Boy #2 – Dean McKeown
Dean McKeown was warned off for 4 years after he was found guilty of conspiracy over the laying of 11 horses trained by Paul Blockley. This effectively ended McKeown’s 30 year career in racing.
Bad Boy #1 – Kieren Fallon
Fallon has had a chequered past being banned after pulling fellow jockey, Stuart Webster, from his horse at Beverley. Awarded damages of £70,000 after suing The Sporting Life for libel. He lost his job as stable jockey to Henry Cecil because of ‘personal differences’.
He entered a rehab clinic after admitting to a drinking problem. He was banned again in 2004 after easing down and being beaten on Ballinger Ridge. Fallon was also among those detained as part of a police investigation focusing on suspicion of corruption within the sport and race-fixing. He was also banned by French Racing in 2006 for testing positive for a prohibited substance.
Kieran Fallon was cleared of corruption charges when the trial against him collapsed in 2007.
Overall – Fallon is without doubt horse racing’s #1 Bad Boy.
