A bumper field is set to compete in the first handicap race of the 2010 Cheltenham Festival – the William Hill Challenge Trophy.
Raced over a distance of 3 miles 110 yards, and featuring 19 fences, this is a tough race and something of a racing lottery. This year’s race will once again feature a number of jumps horses on track for the 2010 Grand National.
2010 William Hill Trophy Favourites
1. The Package:
David Pipe’s The Package has found his way to the top of the 2010 William Hill Trophy betting markets. He carries a decent rating of 154 from the Racing Post and will saddle just 10st 9lbs in the festival’s first handicap. He’ll have a tough trend to beat in this one however, with antepost favourites rarely claiming top honours in the William Hill Trophy. At a best price of 8/1 at Stanjames he remains an attractive each-way bet.
2. Bensalem:
Bensalem is next in the betting for the William Hill Trophy and the only other horse priced under the 15/1 margin. His position in the market doesn’t appear to be warranted by his low rating, and it’s a tall order to ask for a festival win from a horse that hasn’t won a race in three starts. At 15/2 he’s likely to pick up more than a few lay bets.
Long Shots
Bensalem and The Package are the only horses priced below 10/1 for the 2010 William Hill Trophy, with six horses priced in the 15/1 to 20/1 margin. Trends tell us not to ignore horses priced just beyond the favourites, so punters may want to take a closer look at the likes of Character Building, who has a knack for placing, and Calgary Bay, who comes into the William Hill Trophy off the back of a win.
2010 William Hill Trophy Betting Tip
Handicaps are best treated with caution, and we’ll keep our stake on this race small. Rather than try back a racehorse we’ll settle for laying The Package at Betfair. While he’ll incur a big liability if he wins, we can’t see him taking a competitive, chaotic race.
Punters set on attempting to profit from each-way punts should have a look at quality horses weighted under 10st 9lbs. Our picks for a long shot bet would be Ogee.
