Saturday the 23rd of January will see the running of the Victor Chandler Chase, the next installment of the Grade 1 2 mile chase circuit. The race marks the start of the build-up to the 2010 Queen Mother Champion Chase, and will feature a number of the longer priced hopefuls that are likely to compete in that race.
Absent from proceedings will be a number of the stars of the 2 mile circuit, including reigning champion, Master Minded, the up and coming Forpadydeplasterer and the impressive Kalahari King. Meanwhile the likes of popular bets, Twist Magic, Well Chief and Petit Robin will be making an appearance at Ascot this weekend.
A look at the favourites
When it comes to Grade 1 chases you’re generally safe banking on one of the horses in the top three to take the race, and place bets on the antepost favourite must be some of the safest bets in the sport. However, with odds on antepost favourite Twist Magic as low as evens at some bookies, its worth investigating which of the top three merits a solid outright bet.
Twist Magic comes into the 2010 Victor Chandler Chase on the back of his second win in the Tingle Creek Trophy. Paul Nicholl’s gelding has struggled against the likes of Master Minded in recent years, but is more than capable of holding his own against lower-rated company. As a form entry with a recent Grade 1 win to his credit, he deserves his position in the markets.
Petit Robin, by contrast, doesn’t appear to have the Grade 1 credentials to pose a serious threat to Twist Magic. He comes into the 2010 Victor Chandler Chase on the back of a Grade 2 win in the Desert Orchid Chase, where he defeated the antepost favourite for that race, Well Chief.
While he’s yet to score at Grade 1 level, Petit Robin did show touches of real class when he finished second behind Master Minded in last season’s Victor Chandler Chase.
Well Chief rounds off the top three in the betting for the Victor Chandler Chase. This horse’s best days are probably behind him, as he last took a Grade 1 victory in 2004. Recent form shows that he’s unlikely to win, but a decent bet for a place after placing in all four of his races in 2009.
He’s been beaten by both Petit Robin and Twist Magic in the last year, and we don’t see him pulling off a serious upset at Ascot.
2010 Victor Chandler Chase Betting Tip
All in all it appears as if bookies and punters have it right in the Victor Chandler Chase. Given the fact that Twist Magic seems to be a class above his closest competitors, his odds of 5/4 at William Hill are very generous. Petit Robin is priced too short for an each-way bet, so would be best included in a 1-2 forecast with Twist Magic. Well Chief, meanwhile, would return a profit on an each-way bet for punters prepared to take his 11/5 price at Betfair.
