2010 Champion Hurdle Betting Tips & Preview

The Champion Hurdle is the first feature race of the 2010 Cheltenham Festival.

The 2010 edition of the race promises to be something special, with Go Native on the brink of claiming the Triple Crown of Hurdles after winning the 2009 Fighting Fifth Hurdle and the 2009 Christmas Hurdle. A win at Cheltenham would secure a handsome one million pound bonus for his connections.

2010 Champion Hurdle Favourites

1. Go Native:
Noel Meade’s Go Native looks like he has a good chance of bucking the upset trend in the Champion Hurdle. Meade’s entry comes into the race with wins in two of the biggest Grade 1 hurdles events in the sport and has taken three wins and a second place from his last four starts. His 5/1 at William Hill must be one of the most bankable each-way bets at the 2010 Cheltenham Festival.

2. Medermit:
At the time of writing Alan King’s Medermit has replaced Solwhit at second place in the Champion Hurdle betting markets after the latter’s setback on Tuesday. Medermit isn’t in the same class as the horse he replaces in the betting and comes into the race having won only one of his last five starts. That said, at best odds of 8/1 he’s a decent each way bet.

3. Zaynar:
Despite Solwhit’s misfortune, Zaynar has remained at third place in the betting. Nicky Henderson’s entry looks like a class act, and comes into the Champion Hurdle as the incumbent Triumph Hurdle champion. Zaynar has won six of his last eight races, finishing second on two occasions. Trading at over 8/1 at Betfair he’s a compelling each-way bet.

Long Shots

There are more than a few classy hurdlers in the Champion Hurdle field, many of which have come into the race showing top form. However, there are one or two genuine long shots who could cause an uproar at Cheltenham on Tuesday.

These are Donna’s Palm, priced over 50/1 at William Hill and boasting three wins from his last four starts, and Jumbo Rio who is trading at over 100/1 but hasn’t finished outside the places in his last six races.

2010 Champion Hurdle Betting Tip

Get down to William Hill and put a place or each-way bet on Go Native while his odds are still over 4/1. With Solwhit pretty much out of the reckoning, the path to glory is open for Go Native and even a place would return the stake on an each-way bet.

We’re looking at two other each-way bets for this race, with favourite Zaynar one of our targets. Our other each-way bet will go on reigning Champion Hurdle champion, Punjabi, who found form to win the Champion Hurdle Trial at Kempton Park in February.
