Saturday marks the running of the first grade 1 chase of the season, the Betfair Chase. With the final crumbs of the flat season wiped off the table last weekend, it’s the turn of Kauto Star and the pretenders to his various titles to re-emerge on the British national hunt racing scene.

Waning Star?

Kauto Star has top billing in the antepost betting markets for Saturday’s race and only 9 other racehorses have been rated good enough to test him over the 3 miles race at Haydock. Punters considering betting the house on Kauto Star should consider the fact that he fell in the same race last year, and that victory went to rank outsider, Snoopy Loopy.

Paul Nicholls seems to believe that his gelding has what it takes to claim his third race title, but with Kauto Star running for the first time since March, there’s far more uncertainty surrounding how he’ll perform than his 11/10 price suggests.

Anyone who doubts this need look no further than the result of last week’s Connaught Chase, where the previously unbeatable Master Minded came short in a race featuring just 6 other racehorses. The Queen Mother Champion Chase winner started as 4/7 favourite and eventually came home in third place, with Well Chief taking the win.

Jollies and Rags

Which leaves us with the unenviable task of figuring out who may have the ability to depose Kauto Star as the king of grade 1 stayer chases in the UK. Punchestown Gold Cup winner, Notre Pere, is next best priced by bookies at odds of 2/1. While he’s certainly an improving racehorse, punters should be aware that he took a tumble in his last race, and that asking him to beat the likes of Kauto Star after a fall is a big ask.

Madison du Berlais is next on the list. This gelding has a couple of quality grade 2 titles beneath his belt, and is improving rapidly. However, it’s hard to ignore the fact that he came home 43 lengths behind Kauto Star at the Cheltenham Gold Cup earlier this year.

This leaves Imperial Commander as the last serious contender at odds of around 9/1. Imperial Commander has come on a great deal since winning the Paddy Power Gold Cup last year, taking his racing to the next level by claiming the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival – beating firm favourite Voy Por Ustedes.

Betfair Chase Tips

Even though Kauto Star may suffer the same fate as Master Minded, one obviously can’t ignore him in this race. The fact that Snoopy Loopy won as 10 year old proves that age is no impediment to success, and at 8 years Kauto Star should still have it in him. We therefore recommend placing a conservative back bet on the two times winner, then placing a substantial place bet on him in Saturday’s place betting markets. At 9/1 Imperial Commander looks to be the best value each-way bet in the field.
