Saturday will see the running of one of the biggest national hunt race of the month – the 2008 Hennessy Gold Cup. The Grade 3 national hunt steeplechase is scheduled to be run on the 29th of November, and will see some of the stars of the sport run over a distance of 3 miles and 2½ furlongs at Newbury Racecourse.
After a disappointing outing at Haydock last weekend, champion trainer Paul Nicholls will be looking to race favourite Big Bucks to notch up his first major race win of the season. The 5/1 favourite will be up against some tough competition in the handicap, including last weekend’s Betfair Chase winner, Snoopy Loopy.
A look at the field
While punters will find it hard to resist placing a bet on Snoopy Loopy at a price of 16/1 after his upset win in the Betfair Chase, neither Timeform nor the handicapper believes that Peter Bowen’s entry will make it two big race wins in a row.
Air Force One is instead priced as the biggest threat to Big Bucks, with a career record of 6 wins and 3 places in 13 starts. While this record suggests Air Force One is a racehorse looking out for in the future, he has never won at Haydock and has raced in novices events most of his career.

Irish Bred Island Flyer is perhaps better poised to dent Nicholls’ Gold Cup ambitions, with a record of 3 wins and 1 place from 4 starts over fences. At 7/1 Islander Flyer was closing in on Big Bucks in the betting markets before punters shifted their allegiance to Air Force One.
JJ Quin’s Character Building has also wandered into the short-priced mix, and has been priced 7/1 for the Hennessy Gold Cup. Character Building has only finished out of the money twice in 7 starts and came in 3rd at his most recent race at Newbury.
