Gay wins Verizon Heritage
Brian Gay finished a record breaking run at the Verizon Heritage Open at Hilton Head Island by winning the tournament by 10 shots on Sunday.
Gay finished the tournament on 20 under, breaking a scoring record that has stood for 13 years, and taking his second PGA Tour title of the year.
Luke Donald finished a distant second, alongside Briny Baird as Gay also achieved the highest victory margin in a PGA Tour event since Phil Mickelson’s victory at the 2006 Bellsouth Classic.
The win netted Gay a winners cheque for over $1 million and a place in next year’s US Masters, which will be his first appearance at the year’s opening Major championship.
“Just another unbelievable day,” Gay said in summary of one of the most impressive performances seen on the PGA Tour this year.
The 37 year old is one of the PGA Tour’s late bloomers, achieving his first PGA Tour victory in 2008 at the Mayakoba Classic in Mexico.
