Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud

The Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud is one of France’s premier races for older thoroughbred stayers. This Group 1 race is traditionally run in late June at Saint-Cloud Racecourse, and attracts the winners of some of France’s major Group 1 races for 3-year-olds.

The Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud is raced over a distance of 1 mile 4 furlongs. Traditionally an all-French affair, the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud has attracted greater numbers of English and Irish raiders in recent years, and British and Irish trainers have achieved a string of victories in the race.

Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud Betting Tips

  • The Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud requires a careful strategy from punters looking for a profit on the race. Betting markets are a very poor guide to the final result, with favourites winning only 1 out of 5 races.
  • Winners more frequently tend be priced over 4/1 in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud betting markets. This suggests that punters who are backing an entry should consider place or each-way bets on horses priced from 5/1 to 12/1.
  • Lay betting at a betting exchange like Betfair is possibly the best betting strategy to use when placing Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud bets, with favourites for the race often priced below Evens and therefore offering good returns on lay bets.

Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud History

The Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud dates back to 1904, when it was first run at the Maisons-Laffitte Racecourse as the Prix du Président de la République – a 1 mile 5 furlong race for 3-year-old and above thoroughbred racehorses.

The First World War soon interrupted the running of the Prix du Président de la République, and it was only in 1919 that the race was resurrected and moved to Saint-Cloud Racecourse, where it acquired its current name.

During the Second World War the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud was shuffled around several French racecourses due to the closure of Saint-Cloud. The race then made a permanent return to Saint-Cloud Racecourse in 1946.

A number of winners of the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud are joint winners of France’s most prestigious race, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. The most recent thoroughbred to claim this double was the 2000 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud winner, Montjeu, who had won the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 1999.
