The Maghull Novices’ Chase is a grade 1 novice steeplechase contested as part of the annual Grand National Festival at Aintree racecourse. The Maghull Novices’ Chase takes place over a distance of 2 miles with runners required to clear 12 fences during the race.
The Maghull Novices’ Chase is contested by 5-year old and older novice chasers. The event attracts runners who competed in the Arkle Challenge Trophy at the Cheltenham Festival, and is one of the fastest races at the Aintree Grand National Festival.

The Maghull Novices’ Chase has been raced as a part of the Grand National Festival since 1977. Although the race often features entries that participated in the Arkle Challenge Trophy, few go on to win the Maghull Novices’ Chase, with 1983 winner Ryeman the only horse to have won both races.
Trainer Martin Pipe has enjoyed considerable success in the Maghull Novices’ Chase, winning the race four times since saddling his first winner in 1997.
