- Six Nations Tips
Months of speculation over which racehorse will win the Grand National come to a head at Aintree at 4:25 PM GMT, as 40 runners set out over a collection of the most formidable fences in National Hunt racing.
An Open Field
Betting patterns over the past week have revealed the fact that the 2009 Grand National is as open as it has been in years. Millions of punters, unwilling to back a runner, instead waited for Tony McCoy and Ruby Walsh to reveal their choices for the Grand National before placing their bets.
As the race approaches it is the partnership between Cheltenham top jockey Ruby Walsh and Cheltenham Gold Cup 5th place finisher My Will that has attracted the most support from punters. Lurking second in the betting is Butler’s Cabin, who has been heavily backed since being selected by Champion Jockey Tony McCoy.
While My Will and Butler’s Cabin have been backed for sound reasons, a look at all 40 runners reveals several horses capable of upsetting the odds on race day. Parson’s Legacy, Rambling Minster and Comply or Die are all proven stayers who have won over 4m+ distances in their careers, while Black Apalachi,a Becher Chase winner, is one of the few horses in the field to boast a win over the Aintree fences.
Our Tip
There is an element of the lottery to the Grand National, however, recent trends show that factors like weight and age do play a decisive role in deciding the Grand National winner.
With few favourites winning the Grand National we’re backing My Will and Cloudy Lane for a place in the place betting markets. Black Apalachi and Rambling Minster are priced high enough for each-way bets to return a profit of they place, while Parson’s Legacy is our choice of outsiders capable of pulling off an upset.
We’ve spread our bets between Paddy Power and Bet365, with both bookies paying to 5th place at the Grand National.
