Sussex Stakes Winners
The winners of the Sussex Stakes include some of the finest racehorses ever to have competed in Great Britain. Amongst the most famous winners were Giant’s Causeway, Rock of Gibraltar and Henrythenavigator. Remarkably, no horse has ever won the Sussex Stakes twice.
Sussex Stakes History
The Sussex Stakes was first run four decades after the Duke of Richmond set up racing facilities for the Sussex Militia on his Goodwood property. Although the race was first run in 1841, it was only in 1878 that the Sussex Stakes became a popular event and adopted its current format and distance.
Entry to the Sussex Stakes was originally restricted to 3-year old thoroughbreds, in line with entry restrictions for the Classics at that time. Only in 1960 were four year olds permitted to run in the race, and in 1975 the race was opened to all age groups, giving top racehorses the opportunity to extend their Group One careers.
