Stewards Cup
The Steward’s Cup is a thoroughbred handicap race run during the course of the annual Glorious Goodwood meeting. The race is run over a distance of 6 furlongs, and is run by 3 year old and older thoroughbreds.
The Steward’s Cup was first run in 1840, and was named after the trophy that had been presented by the senior race steward to any racehorse of his choice at the conclusion of the Goodwood meeting. Today the race is regarded as one of the most prestigious handicap sprints in thoroughbred racing.
Steward’s Cup Betting Tips
- The majority of Steward’s Cup winners come from the 4 5 year old age range, with both older or younger racehorses rarely winning the race.
- Horses carrying more than 9st in the Steward’s Cup are at a significant disadvantage, with more than 70% of recent Steward’s Cup winners carrying less. The heaviest weight carried to victory in recent decades was 9st 10lbs by King’s Signet in 1993.
Steward’s Cup Winners
The Steward’s Cup may have coined the term ‘cavalry charge’ as this fast and furious race is notoriously difficult to win, commentate on or bet on. Trainers David Barron and Roger Charlton have both targeted the race during recent decades and emerged from the fray with two Steward’s Cup winners apiece.
