Goodwood Racecourse is situated on the borders of the majestic Goodwood House estate of the Duke of Richmond in West Sussex. The racecourse is famed for its scenic splendour, although mists rolling in from the ocean have been known to blanket the racetrack during major race meetings.
The Duke of Richmond established the Goodwood Racecourse in 1802, in order to host the recreational races of the Sussex Militia. These races became so popular that within the period of a few decades Goodwood Racecourse grew into a hub of thoroughbred racing in England.
Goodwood Racecourse is used exclusively for flat racing. The V shaped course is usually run at a distance of 1 mile 6 furlongs, but longer races are facilitated by a figure of eight loop, which allows racehorses to double back over the course and thereby cover longer distances.

The Goodwood racetrack climbs for the first furlong before entering a long downhill stretch that extends to the finishing post. The draw has a measurable effect on the outcome of races on the right-handed course, with low numbers given an advantage in sprints.
