Goodwood Cup

The Goodwood Cup is a group 2 thoroughbred flat race, run during the course of the annual Glorious Goodwood meeting at Goodwood Racecourse. The race is open to 3 year old and older thoroughbreds, and is run over a distance of 2 miles, making it one of the longer races at the Festival.

The Goodwood Cup is one of the oldest races at the Glorious Goodwood Festival, and was first run in 1812. Despite having group 2 status, the Goodwood Cup is recognised as an important race and forms part of the Stayers Triple Crown, with the Doncaster Cup and the Ascot Gold Cup.

Goodwood Cup Betting Tips

  • Experience counts for more than youth in the Goodwood Cup, with some of the older racehorses routinely taking the race. 3 year olds rarely have the stamina or experience to win the race and more than half the winners are over the age of 5.
  • Being part of the Stayers’ Triple Crown, the Goodwood Cup tends to attract entries that competed in the Ascot Gold Cup earlier in the season. The Gold Cup, along with other stayers’ races, can be used as a reliable guide to form in the Goodwood Cup, with horses who performed well at Ascot often going on to do the same at Goodwood.
  • Jockey Michael Kinane has shown a knack for guiding his horses to victory in the Goodwood Cup, and should be value for a punt in this race. It is also worth watching out for the larger stables in this race, as the small fry rarely win the Goodwood Cup.

Goodwood Cup Winners

There have been numerous impressive feats in the Goodwood Cup. Amongst the most notable of these was Persian Punch’s brace of wins in 2001 and 2003. The thoroughbred first won the race at the venerable age of 8, then came back two years later to win the Goodwood Cup as a 10 year old.

Mark Johnston’s Double Trigger also impressed during the period when he competed in the Goodwood Cup, winning the race for the first time as a 4 year old in 1995, before adding two more wins to his tally with consecutive Goodwood Cup victories in 1997 and 1998.

Double Triggers’ performances helped Mark Johnston to become the leading trainer for the Goodwood Cup, and during the decade between 1995 and 2004 Johnston won the Goodwood Cup 5 times. In recent years Aidan O’Briean and Sir Michael Stoute have had to duel for top honours in the Goodwood Cup.
