The Goodwood Cup is a group 2 thoroughbred flat race, run during the course of the annual Glorious Goodwood meeting at Goodwood Racecourse. The race is open to 3 year old and older thoroughbreds, and is run over a distance of 2 miles, making it one of the longer races at the Festival.
The Goodwood Cup is one of the oldest races at the Glorious Goodwood Festival, and was first run in 1812. Despite having group 2 status, the Goodwood Cup is recognised as an important race and forms part of the Stayers Triple Crown, with the Doncaster Cup and the Ascot Gold Cup.

Goodwood Cup Winners
There have been numerous impressive feats in the Goodwood Cup. Amongst the most notable of these was Persian Punch’s brace of wins in 2001 and 2003. The thoroughbred first won the race at the venerable age of 8, then came back two years later to win the Goodwood Cup as a 10 year old.
Mark Johnston’s Double Trigger also impressed during the period when he competed in the Goodwood Cup, winning the race for the first time as a 4 year old in 1995, before adding two more wins to his tally with consecutive Goodwood Cup victories in 1997 and 1998.
Double Triggers’ performances helped Mark Johnston to become the leading trainer for the Goodwood Cup, and during the decade between 1995 and 2004 Johnston won the Goodwood Cup 5 times. In recent years Aidan O’Briean and Sir Michael Stoute have had to duel for top honours in the Goodwood Cup.
