This weekend sees the top talent in British flat racing travel to Curragh, Ireland to compete in the prestigious Group One Irish Guineas races.
Irish 2,000 Guineas
The Irish 2,000 Guineas is scheduled to be run at 3:15pm on Saturday. The sequel to the English 2,000 Guineas has drawn a small field this year, but there is more than enough happening to keep punters interested.
This year’s race is shaping up as a clash between the winner and the runner-up of the English 2,000 Guineas. New Approach is priced as 11/8 race favourite by race sponsor Boylesports, despite losing the English renewal by a nose to Henrythenavigator.
English 2,000 Guineas winner Henrythenavigator is priced second in the Irish 2,000 Guineas betting markets. Boyelsports are offering odds of 13/8 on Henrythenavigator taking his second Classic title of the season.
Six other horses make up the numbers for the Irish 2,000 Guineas, with Aidan O’Brien’s Jupiter Pluvius best poised to upset the short-odds favourites at a price of 8/1.
Irish 1,000 Guineas
The 2008 Irish 1,000 Guineas will be raced at 3:15 pm on Sunday. There is every possibility that Sunday’s Irish 1,000 Guineas may provide the superior spectacle this weekend, with 19 fillies confirmed for the race and Jim Bolger still dithering whether to add a 20th in the form of the brilliant Lush Lashes.
Nadooh is the market favourite at odds of 11/4 with William Hill, despite finishing a disappointing 5th at the English 1,000 Guineas. Jim Bolger’s Saoirse Abu is priced second at odds of 4/1, and he holds the trump card in Lush Lashes who may well be priced as late favourite if Bolger decides to give her a run on Sunday.

Weather and turf conditions at Curragh are expected to be perfect for racing this weekend, which should increase the reliability of the Guineas betting markets. The rain that was scheduled for Ireland earlier this week shows no signs of materialising, and racegoers can look forward to two great days in the sun as they catch the best of Irish thoroughbred racing.
