Prix de Diane

The Prix de Diane is the second leg of the French Classics and is run during June, shortly after the running of the Prix du Jockey Club. Sometimes referred to as the French Oaks, the Prix de Diane was introduced to France as an equivalent to the Epsom Oaks. The race is named after the pagan goddess, Diana.

The Prix de Diane is run at Chantilly racecourse. The race is open to 3 year old thoroughbred fillies and covers a distance of 2100 metres. The race occasionally features fillies that competed in the Prix du Jockey Club, which is run over the same distance, and contributes a handful of entries to the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe every year.

The Prix de Diane dates back to the 1800s, and was first raced five years before the French Revolution. For much of its history the Prix de Diane restricted entry to the race to French thoroughbreds, and only started admitting foreign born thoroughbreds in 1946.

The inaugural race was run at Chantilly Racecourse, but a prolonged period of political upheaval in France thereafter, resulted in the race being moved to several different racecourses before finally settling at Chantilly in 1945. Due to the fact that it is scheduled so close to the Epsom Oaks, the Prix de Diane has produced only two Epsom Oaks winners to date.

Prix de Diane Betting

The Prix de Diane is the most prestigious thoroughbred race for fillies in France. As such, the race attracts significant coverage from bookmakers that target European events, like Bwin and Bet365.

However, good antepost coverage of the race is hard to come by, and Prix de Diane betting markets may only become available several days before the race is run.

The vast majority of Prix de Diane winners have been French-bred fillies. Punters should therefore look out for entries with French group 1 race wins over distances greater than a mile, when making their Prix de Diane selections. Races to research include the Prix de la Grotte, which is considered to be the principle trial for the Prix de Diane.

When placing Prix de Diane bets, it is also worthwhile keeping an eye open for entries with impressive records in the 2 year old season. Whilst group 1 wins in the 2 year old season are generally achieved over distances under a mile, form 2 year olds frequently do go on to achieve impressive results the following season.
