Grand Prix de Paris

The Grand Prix de Paris is the third of the French Classics run each season. Unlike the previous two Classics, the Prix du Jockey Club and Prix de Diane, the Grand Prix de Paris is not based on any of the English Classics.

The Grand Prix de Paris is run over a distance of 2400 metres at Longchamp Racecourse, on Bastille Day in July. The race is open to 3 year old thoroughbred colts and fillies, and often attracts entries from both the Prix de Jockey Club and the Epsom Derby. A win in both the Derby and the Grand Prix de Paris is considered to be amongst the most impressive feats in international thoroughbred racing.

The Grand Prix de Paris was inaugurated in 1863 as a showcase for European 3 year old thoroughbred talent. Unlike the other French Classics, the Grand Prix de Paris was open to international thoroughbreds from the outset, and the first running of the race produced an English champion.

Like the other French Classics, the Grand Prix de Paris has experienced several disruptions due to war and political upheaval, and only found a permanent home at Longchamp after the conclusion of the Second World War. The race distance has also changed a number of times, and for a brief period the race was even run over 3100 metres.

Grand Prix de Paris Betting

Whilst the Grand Prix de Paris does not attract the same level of coverage from UK bookmakers as the English Classics, media and betting coverage of the event do tend to spike when winners of the English Derby are entered into the Longchamp Classic. Antepost betting markets are not widely available for the Grand Prix de Paris, and it’s unusual to find antepost Grand Prix de Paris betting markets opened more than week in advance of the race.

Punters should look at the results of the first French Classic, the Prix du Jockey Club, when betting on the Grand Prix de Paris. A total of 25 winners of the Prix du Jockey Club have gone on to achieve a double win at the Grand Prix de Paris, and even racehorses that placed at the former race are worthy of consideration when placing bets in the Grand Prix de Paris betting markets.

Although fillies are frequently entered in the Grand Prix du Paris, it is worth mentioning that their success rate in the race is well under 10%, and that only those fillies who achieved significant success in group 1 races like the Prix de Diane or Epsom Oaks, should receive serious consideration for this race.
