It wasn’t that long ago FIA president, Max Mosley ran the richest sport in the world, Formula One, with a rod of iron. This week, however, the once omnipotent Mosley fought and lost one of the biggest power struggles of his career – and rightly so. No-one is bigger than the sport itself and no amount of delusional grandeur should be allowed to derail the most exciting motor sport on the planet!
Like so many influential people out there, Mosley appeared to lose touch with reality, and the people and teams that effectively paid his salary. Pure power is clearly a dangerous obsession and had the effect of going directly to his arrogant head! Quite simply, Mosley was of the opinion Formula One would remain loyal to his autocracy, come what may.
The stuff soap operas are made of
For the most part of this year, Formula One has been relegated to the stuff soap operas are made of with Mosley defiant in the face of a mutiny by all but two of the big brand teams that make the sport a veritable seasonal thriller.
Apart from his dictatorial management style, Mosley was adamant a budget-cap be introduced to limit spending, an idea that did not go down well with the F1 teams. Combine that with the fact he allowed the Concorde Agreement, an agreement that encapsulates and enshrines the teams’ role in the creation of F1 rules, to lapse, arguably with intent, then it’s understandable something or someone had to give.
Lost his cred when implicated in a night of bondage, beating and domination
Although Mosley has publicly announced he effectively ‘jumped’ and was in no way pushed, he lost all credibility in the summer of 2008 when he was implicated in a night of bondage, beating and domination by a group of SM specialists. He refused to resign the presidency, even though several leading figures in Formula One demanded he leave the sport for his embarrassing propensity of opting for rather more of a slap than a tickle!
It’s difficult to keep the faith in a man who is the offspring of Oswald Mosley, a fascist who was a firm fan of the Führer, Joseph Goebbels and Benito Mussolini. But it was his very public tirade against the breakaway teams, including Ferrari, McLaren, BMW Sauber and Brawn, calling them ‘loonies’, that raised the ire of all the main players in motor racing, including Ferrari don, Luca Di Montezemolo.
‘Rebel’ championship viewed as one big bluff
Following his outburst, things began to unravel very quickly, with FOTA pressing ahead with their plans to form a ‘rebel’ championship. Even at this stage, Mosley appeared to think it was one great big bluff and that none of the teams would dare to defy him and Bernie Ecclestone.
Well, how the mighty fall – Mosley is out, effective immediately, having lost the power struggle in dramatic fashion and even though he continues to insist he left voluntarily, you’d have to be a bit of a pea brain to believe that one!
Beware of too much power….it always corrupts
Hopefully Formula One will now be able to get down to the real business of the sport, racing motor cars, and although the entire affair has tarnished reputations far and wide; there is one lesson that comes out of all of this – too much power corrupts.
