In the last century Renault has intermittently participated in Formula One racing as a true constructors team, whilst also acting as an engine supplier to some of the most successful teams in Formula One history.

At present Renault is participating in Formula One racing as a true constructor, developing and building both the chassis and engines of its cars. The Renault team is regarded as one of the strongest teams in Formula One racing and has achieved considerable success since making its return to racing.
History
Renault was closely involved in the genesis of Formula One racing, providing the car for the winner of the first ever Formula One Grand Prix in 1906. However, Renault only began participating in the sport as a manufacturer in the 1970s, when it competed as the Renault Sport team.
After a slow start, mostly attributed to a succession of unpredictable and unreliable engines, Renault began achieving good results in Formula One racing towards the end of the 1970s. During the early 90s the team emerged as one of the most powerful in Formula One racing, with drivers like Alain Prost helping the team win a succession of races.
The Renault racing team went into decline in the mid-1980s due to financial difficulties. Lack of funds eventually led to the withdrawal of the Renault team from Formula One racing, only two years after finishing the Constructors Championship in second place. Renault would later withdraw as an engine supplier to other Formula One teams as well.
Renault in Formula One
Renault made a return to Formula One racing in 2000, when it purchased the successful Benetton team. Since then the team has improved steadily to emerge as one of the outstanding constructors in Formula One racing, winning both the 2005 and 2006 Constructors Championships.
Renault recently signed the Formula One Concorde agreement, pledging to participate in the sport as a constructor until at least 2012. The decision was made partially to allay fears that the team would withdraw from Formula One racing as part of a cost cutting exercise under Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn.
