The Mercedes racing brand will end a 56 year absence from Formula One racing in 2010 after buying out reigning Constructors Champions, Brawn GP. The team has retained the services of Ross Brawn as team principal, and will field an all-German driving team comprising Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg.
Headquarters: Stuttgart, Germany
Engine: Mercedes-Benz FO108x
Chassis: Mercedes MGP W01
F1 Debut: 1954 French Grand Prix
Drivers: Michael Schumacher, Nico Rosberg
Mercedes Racing represents collaboration between the famous luxury car manufacturer and Ross Brawn, the brains behind the successful Brawn GP initiative that won the Formula One Constructors Championship on its first attempt in 2009.
The team behind Brawn GP’s 2009 success remains largely unchanged for the 2010 season, with the main changes taking place behind the steering wheel following the departure of Jenson Button and Rubens Barichello to McLaren and Williams respectively.
History
The Mercedes association with motor racing dates back to the earliest days of the sport. However, the team is best remembered for its feats during the 1954 and 1955 Formula One seasons when the legendary Juan Miguel Fangio raced for Mercedes, securing 8 victories.
Mercedes withdrew from motor racing as a constructor at the end of the 1955 racing season, following a serious accident at the Le Mans 24 Hour Race that claimed the life of a team driver as well as 80 spectators. In the next five decades the team restricted its role in the sport to providing engines to various constructors.
Towards the end of the 2009 Formula One season, Mercedes Benz announced that it would buy out the Brawn team at the conclusion of the season, and race under its own brand name in 2010. After a deal with Henkel as a team sponsor fell through, the Mercedes team secured sponsorship from Malaysian oil and gas giant, Petronas.
Mercedes Benz in Formula One
If one regards Mercedes Benz as a ‘new’ team there is little doubt that it will be the most competitive of the debutants in the 2010 Formula One season. The skill and expertise of Ross Brawn will guide the team’s efforts in 2010 while the technical base that powered Brawn to victory will remain intact.
Much attention has been focused on the signing of Michael Schumacher as a team driver in the run-up to the Formula One season. The German will end a two year long absence from the sport in 2010, and will attempt to become the first driver to win 100 Formula One races.
