Brawn F1 Team

Headquarters: Brackley, England
Engine: Mercedes-Benz FO 108W
Chassis: Brawn BGP 001
F1 Debut: 2009 Australian Grand Prix
Drivers: Jenson Button, Rubens Barichello

Brawn F1 is the newest addition to Formula One racing. The team is the product of the sudden and unexpected withdrawal of Honda from Formula One racing, following the Japanese automaker’s declaration that it was unable to sustain the high costs involved in being competitive in the sport.

The Brawn F1 team is named after team principal, Ross Brawn, a former technical director for both Benetton and Ferrari. Brawn’s knowledge and expertise are expected to have a significant impact on his team, who are expected to challenge the top F1 teams in their first season in the sport.

Brawn F1 History
Brawn F1 is the descendent of the Honda F1 team. In 2009 Honda announced that it would be ending its unsuccessful tenure in Formula One racing, following several years of disappointing results and exorbitant expenditure on team development.

With just weeks remaining before pre-season testing the Honda team was put on sale for £1. The high costs of maintaining a Formula One team meant that takers were slow to come forward, and it was eventually a syndicate of former team members headed by Ross Brawn who came forward to purchase the team.

Facing the prospect of running the 2009 season a team short, the FIA were happy to waive registration costs and the team immediately proceeded with pre-season testing and preparations. Both of the Honda F1 drivers, Rubens Barichello and Jenson Button, were retained for the first season in the sport.

Brawn F1 in Formula One
Brawn F1 has inherited the technical expertise of the Honda F1 without the constraints of having to use Honda chassis and engines. The team cars use the custom Brawn BGP 001 Chassis, combined with Mercedes Engines.

The team chose an excellent time to make their Formula One debut, as the other teams in the sport were grappling with the challenge of rebuilding their cars from scratch following the latest round of FIA rule changes.

Excellent results in pre-season testing have suggested that the Brawn F1 team may have both the drivers and technical acumen to challenge for the Constructors Championship title in its first season in the sport.
