Ferrari F1 Team

The Ferrari team, known in Italy as Scuderio Ferrari or Ferrari ‘Stable’, is the oldest and most successful team participating in Formula One racing. Ferrari is a genuine constructor team, designing and manufacturing both the engine and chassis of their cars. After dominating Formula One racing for much of the first decade of the 21st century, Ferrari has lost some ground to other teams in the sport, and struggled to keep up with technological innovation.

Headquarters: Maranello, Italy

F1 Debut: 1950 Monaco Grand Prix
Drivers: Felipe Massa, Fernando Alonso

The Ferrari Formula One team is one of the best-supported teams in international motorsport, with a dedicated Italian following, the tifosi, along with a substantial international support base. The team is currently rated as one of the two strongest teams in Formula One racing, alongside rival McLaren.

History

Ferrari’s involvement with Formula One racing dates back to the 1930s when Enzo Ferrari began sponsoring drivers competing in cars designed and manufactured by Alfa Romeo. In 1939 the association between Ferrari and Alfa Romeo ended, when the start of the Second World War brought motor racing to a temporary halt.

Ferrari used the war years to begin development of his own car. Ferrari’s car made its Formula One debut at the 1950 Monaco Grand Prix, and within one year the Ferrari team achieved its first Formula One race win. The withdrawal of Alfa Romeo from Grand Prix racing in 1952 proved fortuitous for Ferrari, which was able to take the next two Constructors Championships virtually unopposed.

The Ferrari team entered its most successful period in Formula One racing during the 1970s, when it won four Constructors Championships while its drivers won three Drivers Championships. However, during the 1980s Williams outstripped Ferrari, ushering in a prolonged period of decline for the Italian team.

Ferrari’s fortunes began to turn around in the mid 1990s, when the team signed German driver Michael Schumacher, and several of his associates from the Benetton team. This move was to revolutionise the way Ferrari approached Formula One racing, and by the turn of the millennium Ferrari re-emerged as the pre-eminent team in Formula One racing.

Ferrari in Formula One

From a technical perspective Ferrari’s resurgence in Formula One racing has been traced to the FIA’s decision to ban turbo-charged engines from the sport. This occurred after years of lobbying by Ferrari, during which it had threatened to depart from Formula One racing in preference for the Indy Car circuit.

While the constantly shifting regulations of Formula One racing make it difficult for any one team to maintain ascendancy for a prolonged period of time, Ferrari is recognised as being the most consistent of the Formula One teams, holding virtually every record in Formula One racing from championships won, to having recorded the most fastest laps.
