Sauber F1 Team

Sauber Racing is a Swiss Formula One outfit that has enjoyed sporadic involvement in Formula One racing since 1993. 2010 will mark the end of a 4 year long sabbatical from Formula One for Sauber, a period which saw BMW take over the Sauber name and technical resources without achieving much success in the sport.

Headquarters: Hinwil, Switzerland
Engine: Ferrari 056
Chassis: Sauber C-29
F1 Debut: 1993 South African Grand Prix
Drivers: Kamui Kobayashi, TBA

2010 will see the reins of the Sauber brand returned to team principal and founder, Peter Sauber. The team will look to improve on promising results achieved in the first five years of the new millennium under its founder.

Sauber will use Ferrari engines for its cars during the 2010 season, resuming the partnership that powered the team early in the millennium. The team has retained the majority of staff who worked for BMW Sauber despite substantial cuts in the size of the team’s workforce.

History
Peter Sauber began his involvement in racing in 1970, constructing cars for the likes of Mercedes, Porsche and Jaguar and achieving success in several different racing series, including the Le Mans 24 Hour endurance race.

The team took two decades to make its Formula One debut, with Mercedes eventually providing the funding and technical expertise required to help the team make its debut at the 1993 South African Grand Prix in its distinctive black livery.

Despite partnering with a succession of top-quality drivers, Sauber failed to make a major breakthrough in Formula One racing during the next two decades, failing to win a single race and never achieving better than 3rd place on the podium.

The team’s best Constructors Championship result was achieved in 2001 when it finished in 4th place. In 2005 BMW bought the team from Sauber, allowing the Swiss to retain a 20% stake in the team. Following an unsuccessful stint in the sport, BMW resold the team rights to Sauber at the conclusion of the 2009 F1 season.

Sauber in Formula One
Sauber will benefit from considerable technical expertise during the 2010 Formula One season, as well as a resumption of its relationship with Ferrari. The team’s technical and testing infrastructure is amongst the best in the sport.

However, the team may suffer from lack of experience and expertise behind the wheel, as it will rely on the likes of the inexperienced Kamui Kobayashi to produce results on a densely packed grid.
