Yas Marina Circuit

The Yas Marina Circuit was designed to emulate the twists, turns and crowd proximity of the Monaco Street circuit, albeit in a Middle-Eastern setting. The circuit winds past the island’s marina and directly through the Yas Marina Hotel.

The Yas Marina Circuit boasts a number of unique features, including the longest straight on the F1 circuit and a number of corners which drivers have described as ‘unique’.

Significant floodlighting infrastructure was developed to host the race, and the racetrack currently boasts the largest permanent sports lighting system on the planet. The track also has an unusual pit exit – a tunnel that dips beneath the main racetrack.

Abu Dhabi Grand Prix History

The Yas Marina Circuit was custom built to host Formula One racing. The racetrack hosted its first F1 related event in 2007, the Formula One Festival. the largest gathering of teams outside of a grand prix was open to the public and staged the announcement of the forthcoming Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was raced for the first time in 2009 at the conclusion of the racing season. The inaugural race was won by Germany’s Sebastien Vettel, who set the fastest lap record at the venue during the course of the race.

The Future of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is scheduled to be raced until at least 2016 according to a hosting agreement between the Yas Marina Circuit and the FIA. The event is an important marker both of the expansion of Formula One racing to the middle East and of attempt to add new features and challenges to the racing experience.
