Sebastien Buemi’s racing career began with European Kart racing. Buemi’s precocious talent saw him fast-tracked through the various grades of European motor racing, and by the age of 16 the Swiss driver was driving in Formula BMW in Germany.

Buemi enjoyed immediate success in Formula BMW, finishing third in the championship in his first season in the sport, and going one better in 2005 to take second place in the drivers championship. These achievements earned him an invitation to Formula 3 racing.

Formula 3 proved to be a major step up for Buemi, who only manged 12th place in his first season in the sport. However, Buemi improved significantly the following season to finish second in the Formula 3 drivers championship.

A season in GP2 Asia followed for the rapidly maturing Buemi, as he finished his debut season in the second tier of motor racing in second place. During the 2008 season Buemi was appointed as the reserve driver for the Red Bull team and assisted the team during several races.

When David Coulthard announced his retirement from Formula One racing in 2008 Sebastian Vettel was offered the British driver’s position with Red Bull. This left a vacancy at Scuderia Toro Roso, which was subsequently offered to position to Red Bull’s young reserve driver by team management.
