Sébastien Bourdais is a French driver racing for the Scuderia Toro Rosso in Formula One. A newcomer to Formula One, Bourdais boasts an impressive record in Champ Car racing, in which he won 4 consecutive championships before defecting to Formula One.

Sébastien Bourdais made his racing debut in French Kart racing. The young driver achieved impressive results in this form of racing, winning two championships before taking the step to open wheel racing in 1996 when he joined the Formula Renault outfit.
Bourdais spent several more years in French open wheel racing, winning the Formula 3000 Championship in 2002. The following year Bourdais moved to the American Champ Car series where he made an immediate impact by qualifying in pole position for his first race.
Bourdais won the Champ Car series in his debut year, and went on to win three consecutive Champ Car series’ to become one of the most successful drivers in the history of the series. The Frenchman also participated in several other race formats besides Champ Car racing, finishing the Le Mans 24 hour race in second position in 2007.
These results attracted attention from Formula One racing, with both Renault and Toro Rosso showing interest in Bourdais’ skills. After completing a series of tests for the Toro Rosso team, Bourdais was announced as the replacement for Flavoi Briatore at Scuderia Toro Rosso.
Bourdais’ inexperienced was on exhibition in his first season in Formula One racing. The Frenchman failed to keep up with the impressive performances of teammate Sebastian Vettel, finishing in the points on only two occasions. Despite an underwhelming debut, Bourdais was promoted to first driver for the Toro Rosso team following Vettel’s departure to Red Bull at the conclusion of the season.
