Nick Heidfeld is the most successful German racing driver currently competing in Formula One. Nicknamed ‘quick nick’, Heidfeld has the dubious distinction of being the driver with the highest number of championship points never to have won a Grand Prix.

Nick Heidfeld began participating in Kart racing at the age of 11. By the time he had reached his late teens he had progressed sufficiently to be offered a place with the Formula Ford team. Heidfeld made a stunning debut, winning 8 out of 9 races in his first Championship series.

Following on his success in Formula Ford, Heidfeld moved to Formula 3 where he continued to achieve good results. By 1998 Heidfeld was working as a test driver for McLaren, whilst simultaneously racing in Formula 3000. Heidfeld took the Formula 3000 Championship in 1999, after which he was offered a place with the Prost Grand Prix team.

Since joining Formula One racing, Nick Heidfeld has raced with four different teams, and changed team five times. Heidfeld spent a year at Prost before moving to Sauber, where he raced for a single season before joining Jordan. After a brief spell with Williams, Heidfeld returned to BMW Sauber in 2006.

Heidfeld’s performances improved steadily during his time with BMW Sauber, no doubt assisted by the improved car offered by the team. In 2008 Heidefeld achieved points finishes in around half the season’s races, and was unlucky to miss out on a maiden grand prix win after finishing second in four races.
