Nelson Piquet Jr. is the son of former Formula One championship winning driver Nelson Piquet. Piquet’s father has had a large influence on his career. He has not only provided the funds for his son to set up his own racing team, but has also used his influence in the sport to secure Piquet a debut with one of the sport’s top teams.

Piquet’s racing career began in 1993, shortly after he left his mother’s home in Monaco to join his father in Brazil. Piquet spent eight years in Kart racing before taking the step up to open wheel racing in the Formula 3 Sudamerica series, which he won on his second attempt.

After his success on the racetracks of South America, Nelson Piquet Jr moved to England to compete in the British Formula 3 series with his Piquet Sports team. Piquet won the championship in his second year in the series, becoming the youngest ever winner of the Formula 3 championship.

In 2005 Piquet raced for Brazil in the A1 Grand Prix series, whilst simultaneously racing in the GP2 series. After finishing his second season in GP2 in second place, Piquet was offered the reserve/test driver position at Renault. In 2008 Piquet was promoted to the position of racing driver with Fernando Alonso as teammate.

Piquet’s first full season in Formula One proved to be something of a disappointment, as the young driver struggled to keep up with the achievements of his teammate, Fernando Alonso. Piquet failed to complete nearly half of the races in the 2008 season, and finished in the points in only four races despite significant improvements in the Renault car towards the conclusion of the season.
