Mark Webber began racing in Australian Kart series’ as a youngster. Success in the youth format soon enabled him to graduate to the Australian Formula Ford series, where he endured a slow start before finishing second in the championship in his second season.
Webber continued to participate in minor racing series’, often struggling with funding before landing a position with AMG Mercedes to race in the Le Mans 24 hour race. This served as a platform for Webber to enter high-level European racing, and in 2000 and 2001 the Australian achieved good results whilst racing in the Formula 3000 series.
Mark Webber made his Formula One debut in 2002 for Minardi. He has since raced for three other teams, including spells with Jaguar, Williams and Red Bull. During his time in Formula One racing his results have been somewhat mediocre, as he has achieved only two podium finishes and has failed to finish higher than 10th place in the Drivers’ Championship.
Some blame Webber’s performances on his association with a series of teams with uncompetitive cars, and claim that the Australian’s racing ability is clearly illustrated by his ability to out-lap cars from stronger teams during qualifying rounds.
The 2008 Formula One season provided Weber with yet another exercise in frustration. Hampered by the performance of his Red Bull car, Weber managed to score points in more than half of the races for the season whilst failing to make a podium appearance.
However, 2009 saw a turning of the tide for Webber. The Australian benefited from a competitive Red Bull car, and used it to stage his first two wins the sport, winning the German Grand Prix before going on to win the Brazilian Grand Prix to finish at a career high fourth in the Drivers Championship.
