Lucas di Grassi began his racing career in Brazilian Kart racing. As a youngster di Grassi achieved mixed results, but impressed sufficiently to secure a place in the Brazilian Formula Renault series. The step up to Formula racing suited di Grassi, who finished second in the championship in his debut season.

Di Grassi moved up to South American Formula Three racing the following year and would spend three seasons racing at this level. His inaugural season saw him achieve an impressive second place despite missing 6 races during the season, and a year later di Grassi found himself recruited to British F3 racing.

In 2005 di Grassi moved up yet another step by racing in the F3 Euroseries for Manor Racing. During the course of the season di Grassi competed against future F1 champion, Lewis Hamilton, and eventually finished the season in 3rd place.

In 2006 di Grassi moved on to GP2 racing, where he initially struggled to make his presence felt. After a disappointing season, the youngster moved to ART Grand Prix, and immediately began achieving results, eventually finishing his second season in GP2 racing in second place, behind Timo Glock.

2008 saw di Grassi move to Campos Racing, where he again performed consistently to claim 3rd place in the Drivers Championship. Frustrated by his inability to win a major title, di Grassi moved on to Racing Engineering for the 2009 season, a move that resulted in him once again finishing the GP2 season in 3rd place.

During the 2008 season, di Grassi began testing for the Honda F1 team. The following year he was invited to test for Renault, establishing a foothold in the sport. The Brazilian’s efforts paid dividends towards the end of the 2009 season, when he was invited to join GP2 rival, Timo Glock, at the new Virgin Racing team.
