Räikkönen made his European debut at the age of 15, racing in Monaco. During the next decade Räikkönen made steady progress racing in Formula Ford and Formula Renault, and achieving his first Championship title by winning the Formula Renault Series in 2000.

The Finn made his Formula One debut with Sauber in 2001, switching to McLaren Mercedes the following season. The move to McLaren boosted Räikkönen’s performances, as he won his first Grand Prix in Malaysia and finished second in the Drivers’ Championship. He repeated this achievement in 2005, finishing 2nd after winning 7 Grand Prixs.

Räikkönen’s move to Ferrari in 2007 proved to be the turning point in his career. The Finn won his debut race with Ferrari, then went on to win a further 5 races on his way to claiming his first Drivers’ Championship.

In 2008 Räikkönen took a back seat in the Ferrari team, as teammate Felipe Massa stole the limelight. Despite winning only 2 Grand Prixs to Massa’s 6, Räikkönen’s performances played a crucial role in helping Ferrari to win the Constructors Championship.
