Jarno Trulli

Jarno Trulli was born into racing. His father, a keen racing enthusiast, named his son after Finnish motorcycle champion Jarno Saarinen. Trulli is one of the true veterans of Formula One racing and has been involved in the sport as a driver for over a decade. In 2010 Trulli will spearhead the return of the Lotus brand to Formula One racing.

Jarno Trulli showed promise as a racing driver from an early age. His father introduced him to Kart racing, and by the time he was in his late teens he had captured two Kart Championship titles. Trulli soon graduated to professional racing and won his first major title in the Formula 3 series in 1996.

His Formula One debut followed in 1997, during which Trulli raced for Minardi, and put in a series of promising performances before making the decision to defect to Jordan. Trulli spent the next two seasons at Jordan before securing a contract with Renault.

Trulli achieved his best results at Renault, frequently finishing in the points and finishing every season with the team in the top 8. Towards the end of 2004 Jarno Trulli moved again, this time joining Toyota and achieving his highest ever Drivers’ Championship finish of 6th place.

Subsequent seasons at Toyota were not as promising, as Trulli slid out of the top 10 while his team struggled to adapt to the demands of Formula One racing.

In 2008 Toyota improved marginally on its performances the previous season. Trulli finished in the points in 10 races that season, and achieved a podium finish at the Canadian Grand Prix, where he finished third. The following season produced better results for Trulli, who finished on the podium twice and completed the season in the top ten in the Drivers Championship.

Late in the season Toyota announced that it would be withdrawing from Formula One racing. The departure of Toyota left Trulli a free agent, however the Italian was soon headhunted by the Lotus team as it prepared to make its return to Formula One racing.
