Jaime Alguersuari began his senior racing career at the tender age of 15, competing in the Italian Formula Renault Winter Series. At the age of 16 he impressed racing pundits by finishing the season in second place in the series championship, behind Mika Mäki.

In 2008 Alguersari took the step up to Formula 3 racing in the British Formula Three Championship. The young Spaniard put together an impressive string of late-season performances to claim the championship title on debut.

Alguersari’s performances did not go unnoticed to by Formula One teams, and Scuderia Toro Rosso was the first team to act, hiring the Spaniard as its reserve driver in 2009. The Spaniard spent just two weeks in this position before Sebastien Bourdais departed the team, automatically promoting Auguersuari to the driver’s seat.

At the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix Alguersari became the youngest driver ever to race in a grand prix, and only the seventh teenager in history to do so. The Spaniard finished the race in 15th place, ahead of teammate Sebastien Buemi.

The remainder of Alguersari’s Formula One season was plagued by car problems. The teenager retired in five of his seven remaining races that season, and was unable to finish a single race in his debut season in the top 10. His fans nevertheless believe that there are great things yet to come from the young star.
