Giancarlo Fisichella’s professional racing career began in Italian Formula 3 racing in 1992. Fisichella spent three years racing in open cars, winning the 1994 Italian Formula 3 Championship. He then changed formats and spent a year driving in the International Touring Car Championship.
A Formula One debut followed in 1996 when Fisichella joined the Minardi team. The Italian was replaced before the season concluded and signed with Jordan for the 1997 season, where he went on to produce several good performances in an inferior car.
Since making his debut, Giancarlo Fisichella has met with mixed fortunes in Formula One racing. His greatest success came whilst racing for Renault in the 2004 and 2005 seasons, during which he won two Grand Prix and achieved a number of podium finishes, finishing in the top 5 of the championship on both occasions.
Following an unsuccessful season with Renault in 2007, Fisichella was replaced at Renault by Nelson Piquet Jr. Fisichella was subsequently signed by the new Force India team to guide them through their Formula One debut. Force India struggled in its first season in the sport, as Fisichella failed to make an impact on any race with his uncompetitive car. Fisichella eventually finished the season in 19th place after crashing out of almost a third of his races.
