Fernando Alonso is Spain’s most successful racing driver and the winner of two Drivers’ Championships. Alonso holds the record as the youngest driver to have won a Championship, thereby breaking Emerson Fittipaldi’s record. In addition he holds the record as the youngest double champion.

Fernando Alonso achieved success in racing at an early age. With the help of his father, a racing enthusiast and mechanic, Alonso won six consecutive racing championships between 1993 and 1998, and also claimed the Junior World Cup in 1996.

In 1999 Alonso joined Minardi, racing in the Nissan series, where he again claimed the championship. During this period Alonso also began testing Formula One cars for Minardi, impressing the team with his ability to lap faster than the racing drivers.

By 2001 Alonso had joined the Formula One Minardi team, becoming the third youngest participant in the history of the sport. Although Alonso failed to make the podium during his debut season, his performances caught the eye of the Renault team. Alonso spent a year working as this team’s test driver before being promoted to racing driver in 2003.

Alonso prospered at Renault, winning his first race in 2003 and finishing the season in 6th place. The following year Alonso failed to win a race but made the podium three times. With the introduction of the Renault F25 chassis, Alonso came of age. The Spaniard won the Drivers Championship in both 2005 and 2006.

Fernando Alonso changed teams for the 2007 season, spending a year at McLaren, and finishing the Drivers’ Championship in third place. The year was packed with intrigue as Alonso clashed repeatedly with teammate Lewis Hamilton, and neither managed to finish the season in first place. With relations between Alonso and McLaren also strained, the Spaniard made the decision to return to Renault for the 2008 season.

Alonso’s success in Formula One racing has been accompanied by a series of controversies, and he has been accused of influencing the outcome of races and qualifying sessions by using negative driving tactics. Alonso also later became one of the key figures implicated in the infamous McLaren spygate scandal that broke in 2008.

Off-track controversy aside, Fernando Alonso enjoyed mixed success during the 2008 Formula One season. The season began badly for the Spaniard as he was forced to retire from 3 races, and repeatedly failed to make the podium. However, the final races of the year saw significant improvements in the Renault car, and Alonso used this to win two races towards the end of the season before finishing 2nd in the final race of the year.

In 2009 Alonso found himself unable to compete effectively due to issues with his Renault. After finishing the season in 9th place, having made the podium just once, Alonso made the decision to join Ferrari for the 2010 Formula One season.
