David Coulthard graduated from Kart racing to open wheel racing at the age of 18, joining the Formula Ford series. He subsequently won the Young Racing Driver of the Year award in this form of racing. Coulthard began participating in Formula One in 1993, beginning as a test driver for Williams.
In 1994 Coulthard was promoted to racing driver at Williams after the tragic death of Ayrton Senna. Coulthard spent two years at Williams, where a series of accidents handicapped his performance, before joining McLaren for the 1997 season.
Coulthard spent the following 9 years racing for McLaren. During this period he achieved impressive results, but the partnership between Ferrari and Michael Schumacher proved unbeatable, and Coulthard had to settle for a succession of 3rd and 2nd place finishes in the Drivers’ Championship.
In 2005 David Coulthard was recruited to the Red Bull racing team to help guide the team through its development phase. The move to Red Bull had a significant effect on his results, and he has been unable to recapture the form that enabled him to win dozens of Grand Prix with McLaren.
David Coulthard retired from Formula One racing at the conclusion of the 2008 Formula One season. His final season in the sport saw him crash out of a number of races as he accumulated only 8 championship points. Coulthard continues to work with Red Bull Racing in an advisory capacity.
