Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours
The Magny Cours circuit has hosted the French Grand Prix since 1991. The racetrack is unpopular amongst teams and race organisers due to its isolated setting, and is unlikely to continue hosting the French Grand Prix into the next decade.
The Magny Cours racetrack has been criticised for providing few opportunities for overtaking, which means that the French Grand Prix tends to be predictable and uneventful. Races at Magny Cours are thus inclined to focus on team strategy, unless wet weather intervenes, in which case the race is conducive to becoming more open.
French Grand Prix History
The French Grand Prix is the oldest grand prix in Formula One, and was first raced in 1906 in Sarthe. The race was held as an independent grand prix until 1925 when it became part of the first World Championship.
In 1950 the race was incorporated into the new Formula One World Championship and has been a part of the championship every year since. During the 20th century the French Grand Prix was moved to a number of venues in France before it found a permanent home at Magny Cours in 1991.
The move to Magny Cours proved to be a mistake. Initially intended to stimulate the economy of the surrounding towns, the racecourse has instead caused logistical problems for the teams participating in the French Grand Prix.
The Future of the French Grand Prix
Since 2004 there have been repeated calls to move the French Grand Prix away from Magny Cours or even to cancel it entirely. Financial difficulties have also contributed to the decline of the French Grand Prix, and there have been several announcements that the race would be suspended in the near future.
However, the French Grand Prix has proved to be remarkably resilient and has thus far survived three attempted cancellations. However, change is unavoidable and it is likely that the French Grand Prix will need to find a new home if it is not to be dropped from the Formula One World Championship.
