Fact Pack
Date: 21/06/09
Venue: Silverstone
Weather Forecast: Partly Cloudy, 27°C
Reigning Champion: Lewis Hamilton
Favourite: Jenson Button (4/6 at Bet365)
The F1 traveling circus sets up shop in Silverstone this week for the 2009 British Grand Prix. Fans will be hoping for an exciting race after a dull Turkish Grand Prix, with the locals likely to settle for Jenson Button claiming his 7th GP win of the season. Button wouldn’t mind winning his home race either, as it would mark his first victory at Silverstone and put him virtually out of reach of his rivals in the Drivers Championship.
Bulls vs. Brawn
The Turkish Grand Prix clarified the fact that Red Bull is the only team likely to put Brawn under pressure during the remainder of the 2009 Formula One season. While Ferrari were not dreadful, they’re still some way off winning a grand prix in 2009 and are more likely to wrap up a few end-of-season races once the Drivers and Constructors Championships are done and dusted.
For the rivalry between Red Bull and Brawn to really put pressure on the latter one of Mark Webber or Sebastien Vettel will need to rain on the Silverstone parade this weekend. Vettel has threatened Button on a number of occasions this season, and a win at Silverstone would position Red Bull perfectly for a mid-season run on the title.
Silverstone Speed
Silverstone is the perfect setting for the battle between Red Bull and Brawn this weekend. The track has three corners that provide genuine overtaking opportunities, but has enough length in the straights to promote real speed. With the balance between car and driver perfectly calibrated on this track, the British Grand Prix is certain to set the adrenaline pumping.
Formula One Betting
Despite Button’s dominance of the 2009 Formula One season, betting value in the outright winner markets is not yet a thing of the past. While a Button win hardly encourages a decent punt at 4/6, Sebastien Vettel is priced high enough for a decent each-way bet at odds of 9/2. Rubens Barichello and Mark Webber are both priced generously for each way punts with their prices averaging around the 8/1 mark.
