The 2010 Racing Post Chase takes places this weekend at Kempton Park. The Kempton Park spectacular is one of the most eagerly anticipated Grade 3 chases of the season, and serves as one of the main trial events for the Grand National, even though the race distance falls 1 mile 4 furlongs short of National’s marathon distance.
Trends and Favourites
The Racing Post Chase tends to produce strong favourites, with the favourite in the betting markets often backed to below the 5/1 margin. Favourites don’t, however, have an impressive record in this race, with only two antepost favourites taking the Racing Post Chase since the turn of the millennium.
This trend does not auger well for the prospects of the race favourite Nacarat.
In fact, Nacarat’s position at the head of the betting markets is somewhat mystifying, given that the defending champion hasn’t placed in his last 3 races and is carrying a weighty 11st 8lbs. Nacarat’s price has probably been pushed down somewhat by the announcement that he’ll have Tony McCoy on board at Kempton Park this weekend.
Fistral Beach looks to be a stronger contender. Paul Nicholls’ candidate hasn’t finished outside the top two in his last five races and comes into the Racing Post Chase on the back of a win in a handicap chase at Kempton Park in January.
Possol, who’ll be carrying 11st 1lb on the day, also looks like a tempting prospect. Henry Daly’s entry has three wins and a second place from his last five races and is offering real value on each-way bets at 8/1 in the Racing Post Chase betting markets.
The Field
While we feel Nacarat could be trading at a higher price we do feel that the three strongest contenders are priced in the top three. Nevertheless, handicaps always carry the risk of an upset, and it’s worth looking at which horses could surprise at Kempton Park on Saturday.
Richard Lee’s Le Beau Bai stands out for the race, as he has placed in his last four races, but his trip to Kempton is in doubt given the recency of his outing in the Blue Square Gold Cup. Phillip Hobb’s Private Be is travelling very light on Saturday, with just 10st onboard, has finished second in his last three races and is trading at 25/1.
Meanwhile Nicky Henderson’s Duc de Regniere has been in good form of late and comes into the 2010 Racing Post Chase on the back of four places in four races. He’ll be carrying a relatively lightweight 10st 12lbs on Saturday and offers good value on an each way bet.
2010 Racing Post Chase Tip
We’re not going to stray too far from the markets for our Racing Post Chase betting tip.
With the race paying each-way bets to 4th place, we’re happy to take each-way bets on the top three in the markets – Possol, Fistral Beach and Nacarat.
This leaves us with one each-way bet to spare on a long shot.
There a number of contenders for this bet, but we’re going to go with Private Be. He’ll be travelling light over the Kempton Park fences, is in decent form, and would pay out generously on each-way bets.
