This weekend witnesses the running of one of the key trial races for the Cheltenham Festival – the 2010 Ascot Chase.
The Grade 1 race is run over 2 miles 5½ furlongs at Ascot Racecourse, and will once again attract a small field of entries looking to notch a group one win before heading to either the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Queen Mother Champion Chase
A look at the favourites
Richard Johnson’s Planet of Sound heads the betting markets for the 2010 Ascot Chase. His foundation as the market leader looks somewhat shaky, given that it’s based on four places in four races. He has also never scored at Grade 1 level.
Herecomesthetruth is unpredictable entry at second in the betting. This horse has finished one of his last three races, yet showed star potential as a novice, and beat the impressive Forpadydeplasterer in the Ladbrokes.com Chase in November.
Alberta’s run clocks in in third place, trading at 5/1 at totesport. He hasn’t been in the sharpest form of late, finishing 6th in a top quality field in the King George VI Chase.
However, he has an excellent record over short distance races and has Grade 1 race wins under his belt. He also beat Planet of Sound during the last meeting between these two horses at Ascot in 2009.
The Field
Monet’s Garden, the Sawyer and Oh Crick complete the line-up at Ascot.
Monet’s Garden has a number of Grade 1 wins to his name, but has faded somewhat in the last year, and finished well behind Alberta’s Run at the Grade 2 Amlin 1965 Chase at Ascot in November. Meanwhile Oh Crick is a decent Grade 3 racehorse, but probably lacks the class to score at the top level.
The Sawyer makes up the numbers for the 2010 Ascot Chase. R Buckler’s horse isn’t very experienced outside of handicaps, and it would be a massive ask of him to produce in a Grade 1 chase at first attempt.
2010 Ascot Chase Betting Tip
Alberta’s Run is our tip for the 2010 Ascot Chase at 5/1 at totesport.
Jonjo O’Neill’s entry still offers value on each-way bets, and has both the class and experience to pull through at Ascot (a racecourse he seems to like). Herecomesthetruth is also an interesting proposition, but is priced a bit to short to encourage a straight back bet.
We’ll look to add value to our bets by also placing a lay bet on Planet of Sound at Betfair.
