Epsom Oaks Betting Tips

The Epsom Oaks is the biggest thoroughbred fillies’ race of the flat racing season, and one of only a handful of horse races in the United Kingdom to receive year-round antepost betting coverage from top bookmakers.

The Epsom Oaks takes place towards the middle of the flat racing season, which means punters are given ample opportunity to assess the form of competing fillies in a series of Epsom Oaks trial races. The following trends have emerged in the Epsom Oaks in recent years:

Epsom Oaks Tips

  • The Lingfield Oaks Trial is the most important trial race for the Epsom Oaks. Around 30% of Lingfield Oaks Trial winners go on to win the Epsom Oaks, and any horse that places in this race should be considered a potential Oaks winner.
  • The winners of the 1,000 Guineas rarely navigate the step up in distance at the Oaks to claim a Classics double. Around 1 in 10 fillies achieves the Oaks/1,000 Guineas double. This is worth remembering, given that betting markets will often favour a 1,000 Guineas winner when one is entered into the Oaks.
  • Race favourites have a poor record in the Epsom Oaks with a hit rate of less than 10% during recent decades. It is impossible to discount long odds entries in this race, as several entries priced above 10/1 have won the race in recent decades.
