When entered in the Epsom Derby, the winner of the 2,000 Guineas will tend to attract strong support from punters in the Epsom Derby betting markets. It is therefore worth keeping in mind that it is extremely rare for winners of the 2,000 Guineas to go on to a win at Epsom Downs.
Fillies rarely take part in the Epsom Derby, and when they do don’t tend to fare too well. The last filly to run in the race was entered as a favourite, and finished the race in 9th place.
Antepost favourites have a decent record of converting their favourite status into wins in the Epsom Derby, with around a third of all Epsom Derby betting favourites going on to win the race.
It is unusual for genuine long shots to win the Epsom Derby, as horses priced at the top of the betting market are normally those that go on to land the spoils in the race.
Bets on Epsom Derby entries are best restricted to those racehorses priced below 10/1. The last thoroughbred priced longer than 10/1 to win the race did so in 1998, when High Rise caused a huge upset by winning the race at odds of 20/1.
